David Blackbear Ramsey will present “Living Simply in the Prehistoric Susquehanna River Valley” at the 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 20 meeting at the Northumberland County Historical Society. The program will focus on the various foods eaten by local Native Americans and how they were prepared as well as changes made during the European contact. Ramsey developed an interest in food because it has been and always will be a large part of human survival and he believes that studying the past can teach us how to approach the future.
In 1987, Ramsey, whose Indian heritage is Mohawk and Penobscot, began doing educational programs for all ages on American Indian life. He and his wife Dana and their family have participated in local heritage and history events and national living history events on the east coast. “While doing living history events with our seven boys, food was a very big part of learning as all were hungry. Dana and I worked on all sorts of foods that were authentic which likely inspired our son Joshua to become a paleoethnobotanist to further study ancient Native foods,” Ramsey said.
He has written articles on Native Americans in Susquehanna Life for more than four years, providing him the opportunity to educate others through the written word. He gained additional insight into the American Indian Movement when he served as the assistant to the director of the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee while Peltier was an inmate at the Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary.
The Northumberland County Historical Society is located at 1150 North Front Street in Sunbury. A reception will follow the program which is free and open to the public.
