When you find a horse hitched to your shade tree, turn them loose. Shade trees are not planted and nurtured for hitching posts.
Tom Harter, editor of The Post, met in Richfield, by all odds, veteran tramp and dead-beat, Old Abe Lacy. He is quite decript and is compelled to drag himself along with two canes. He is weighing probably 250 pounds, stutters the same as he used to, eats as much as a hog and knows every family in Pennsylvania. We conversed with the repulsive old fellow, keeping a safe distance, for our boyhood knowledge of the old man caused us to still regard him as children would a spook or hobgoblin.

Robert Rothermel of Chapman Twp writes that he has read The "Post" every week for thirty years and expects to continue to do so for the reminder of his life.
In an effort to check the mountain fires west of Troxel-ville a week ago, the men started fires against the appoa-ching flames, which will likely be the basis for a lawsuit, as these fires destroyed considerable fences and some buildings on Hon. P.F. Rigel's farm along Jack's Mountain.

Representatives of the archi-tectural firm which prepared the plans for the renovation of the Snyder County Prison in 1978 will tour the jail with county representatives.
Two weeks ago a prisoner escaped from the jail by punching a hole in the plaster ceiling of his cell, which had no steel plate above it.
Both Sheriff Nornhold and Warden Benner have stated they did not know that all the cells were not steel enclosed.

Prior to 1787 the only township in the area known as Snyder County was Penn Township. So steps were taken to carve a new township out of this large township and the action was approved by the Northumberland County court in its May session.
This new township was called Beaver Dam Township. This was not due to a family name of "Beaver" in the area, but rather the prevalence of the small animals in the ponds and streams in the area.
In the time around 1800, the long name of the township as abbreviated to Beaver Township. It was very large at first since the whole of the county was made up of Beaver and Penn Townships. But later, the large Beaver township was split into Center Twp (1805); West Beaver Twp (1843); portions of Franklin Twp (1853); Adams Twp (1874); and Spring Twp (1885).
Surveys are recorded in the area as early as 1793 and the land sold to settlers whose names have a familiar ring to those in the area. Among the names recorded are Kern, Kline, Klose, Feese, Middles-warth, Rearick, and many others. These pioneers erected their log cabins, cleared the land and began agriculture, being the main occupation of the day.
Beavertown borough is situated on land which was sold to John Swift in 1760. Later on, it was conveyed to Jacob Lechner who laid out the town plot in 1810. He named the town Swifttown, in honor of John Swift.
Not unlike the origin of many other towns, it had a few settlers living in log houses at the time the town was laid out. Along with the increasing population, came all the known crafts at that time. New technologies also came to the small town area.
Agriculture and lumbering were full time jobs for the early settlers, their products being primarily for local consumption. Sawmills prospered in the area, with the availability of good lumber in the immediate area and on Jack's Mountain, running directly behind the town.

Also in this formative period, several grist mills were constructed and used the revolving stones to grind flour. All of these early mills were water powered.
The Formation of Beaver Township and Beavertown...
From Beginnings to Bicentennial
When the Post Office was first erected in the new town in 1830, the name was changed to simply Beavertown.
With progress ever on the march, the log houses were replaced by more modern buildings. Small factories specializing in a standardized product replaced the one-man shops. Some of these products before the turn of the century were plows, bells, matches, furn-iture, and gloves.

Beginning in 1907, automobiles were manufactured as well in Beavertown. The first Kearns Car was an Auto Buggy they called "The Eureka", constructed on South Center Street.

Today, Beavertown is home to over 800 people, in over 350 households. It's less than one square mile, but its historical footprint is much larger than that.

Fort Augusta Holds Living History Day
Fort Augusta was the setting for Living History Day on Saturday, August 14th. Traditional craftspeople demon-strated their 18th century crafts and exhibited their wares.
Tinsmithing, colonial cooking, powder horn making, leather working, and spinning/weaving were all demonstrated, with the artisans answering questions from attendees.
Also featured was Laundress Joyce Bucci from Binghamton, New York. She spends many weekends a summer showing the mundane and time consuming chore of simply washing clothes. Using several wooden pails, and homemade soaps and pre-wash items, she demonstrated how hard it was just to keep clothes clean, before the advent of modern washing machinery.
Fort Augusta was first con-structed in 1756 as part of the British defense against the raids of the French and Indians from the upper Allegheny region. Later, it served as an American fortress to aid in protecting settlers of the upper Susquehanna from Britain's Indian allies to the north.
The Northumberland Historical Society now occupies the Hunter House, built on the grounds of the original fort.
To help celebrate the Beavertown Bicentennial, candy and clothing items with the special logo will be available for purchase at the Beavertown Borough Office. The Susquehanna Bank in Beavertown will have items on display in their lobby.
